Opera by Ottorino Respighi (libretto by C Guastalla after H W Jenssen), first produced at the Teatro Reale, Rome, Italy, on 23 January 1934. It describes how Silvana, the wife of Basilio, falls in love with her stepson, Donello, using magic to seduce him. The two are found together; Basilio drops dead, and Silvana is tried for witchcraft. She realizes the futility of her passion and is condemned to death.
