field of view| Angle over which an image may be seen in a mirror or an optical instrument such as a telescope. A wide field of view allows a greater area to be surveyed without moving the instrument, but has the disadvantage that each of the objects seen is smaller. A convex mirror gives a larger field of view than a plane or flat mirror. The field of view of an eye is called its field of vision or visual field. |
| A telephoto lens has a small field of view, around 14°, and produces a highly magnified image. A ‘fish-eye’ lens has a very wide angle of view, around 180°. Our eyes have a field of vision of around 45°. |
