fieldwork

In anthropology, the gathering and analysis of first-hand information through direct observation of a society or social group.

It was developed by William Rivers and Bronislaw Malinowski as a more scientific method of research, but its capacity for comprehensiveness and objectivity has been questioned.

Still, one hears too much of the voice of the fieldworker and not enough of that of the peasant, housewife or the tribal, and a rigorous treatment of inter-subjectivity is missing.
