file allocation table

In computing, a table used by the operating system to record the physical arrangement of files on disk. As a result of fragmentation, files can be split into many parts sited at different places on the disk.

The structure of the disk tracking system is contained in the File Allocation Table which keeps data sectors allocated in groups called clusters.
When interfacing to flash drives, Vinculum manages the file allocation table (FAT) structure by using a straightforward command set.
All disk imaging products support the Windows file systems -- File Allocation Table (FAT) 16, FAT 32, and NT File System (NTFS)--and some provided limited support for Linux file systems Ext2, Ext3 and Linux Swap, but today only Acronis supports ReiserFS, the default file system used by SuSE Linux.
