file extension

In computing, the last three letters of a file name in DOS or Windows, which indicate the type of data the file contains. Extensions in common use include .TXT for ‘text’, .GIF for ‘graphics interchange format’, and .EXE for ‘executable’.

In Windows, the operating system may be configured to associate specific file extensions with specific programs, so that double-clicking on a file name starts the right program and opens the file for editing.
