castanetsSpanish percussion instrument made of two hollowed wooden shells, originally chestnut wood (Spanish castaña). They are held in the palm and drummed together by the fingers to produce a rhythmic accompaniment to dance. Orchestral castanets or ‘clappers’, mounted on a handle, were employed by silent-film effects musicians to imitate the sound of a galloping horse, hence the phrase ‘to run like the clappers’. In ``Pasha and Bayadere,'' a photograph of an overlord and dancer, Fenton attached wires from the woman's wrists to the ceiling, which allowed her to pose with her hands over her head while dangling finger cymbals during the length of time it took to get an exposure. Triangles, tambourines, castanets, small xylophones, finger cymbals, maracas, and drums of all sorts are definitely worth having around the house. |
