Software utility that retrieves information about a user from another computer, perhaps across the Internet. Fingering an e-mail address may, where permitted, reveal the user's real name and any other details stored in a profile or resumé, such as company, position, or telephone number. Finger first appeared in Unix but is also provided in other operating systems such as Microsoft Windows.
