firewall

In computing, security system built to block access to a particular computer or network while still allowing some types of data to flow in and out onto the Internet. The firewall is often the first line of defence against hackers.

A firewall allows a company's employees to access sites on the World Wide Web or exchange e-mail while at the same time preventing hackers from gaining access to the company's data.
