flak

Term used by Allied troops and airmen in World War II to describe anti-aircraft fire from the German abbreviation for Flugzeugabwehrkanone – ‘aircraft attack gun’.

A flak jacket was an armoured jacket worn by air crews as a defence against bullets and shell fragments.
