flash flood

Flood of water in a normally arid area brought on by a sudden downpour of rain. Flash floods are rare and usually occur in mountainous areas. They may travel many kilometres from the site of the rainfall.

Because of the suddenness of flash floods, little warning can be given of their occurrence. In 1972 a flash flood at Rapid City, South Dakota, USA, killed 238 people along Rapid Creek.
