flashover

Small fire that erupts suddenly into a much larger one. It can occur if there is sufficient build up of heat from a small fire to ignite the mixture of gas and smoke produced. This increases temperatures further igniting surroundings. Flashovers can occur extremely rapidly with temperatures of 1,100°C being reached in seconds.

In areas of moderate to high contamination, there has been a strong trend to the use of silicone housed composite insulators due to the increased performance in the suppression of leakage currents, flashover resistance and the reduced maintenance of the line.
This, in turn, deteriorates the insulation, and that can cause flashovers and short circuits.
