steward

In England, former keeper of a court of justice. He was either an officer of the Crown or of a feudal lord. The Lord High Steward was a member of the House of Lords who presided over a court when a person was impeached or when a peer was tried for treason or felony. He was the sole judge in the case. The steward of a lord of the manor was responsible for all financial and legal matters.
