flotation

Launching a company on the stock market. A company may be floated in a number of ways, including a public placing in which shares are placed with institutional investors such as pension funs, or a public offer for sale when shares are offered for sale to the public. Once the flotation is complete the shares can be traded on the open market. Raising capital and rewarding early stage investors are two common reasons for floating a company.
