flotsam, jetsam, and lagan

In law, goods cast from ships at sea, due usually to the event or prevention of shipwreck. Flotsam is the debris or cargo found floating; jetsam is what has been thrown overboard to lighten a sinking vessel; lagan is cargo secured, as to a buoy, for future recovery.
