They are found worldwide in granaries and stores where both the adult beetles and the larvae feed on damaged grain or flour. Neither adults nor larvae can eat intact grains. To study evolutionary aspects of such behavior, he and his colleagues switched to red flour beetles (Tribolium castaneum). This includes the flour beetles, weevils and other pests that are milled along with our grain; and a surprising number of insects that wind up in processed items like apple cider and applesauce. Then, they put two of each kind of chemically armored box, two untreated cardboard cartons, and hundreds of red flour beetles in a large container. |
