flystrike

Infestation of the flesh of living sheep by blowfly maggots, especially those of the blue blowfly. It is one of the most costly sheep diseases in Australia, affecting all the grazing areas of New South Wales. Control has mainly been by insecticide, but nonchemical means, such as docking of tails and mulesing, are increasingly being encouraged. Mulesing involves an operation to remove the wrinkles of skin which trap moisture and lay the sheep open to infestation.
