foraminifera

Any marine protozoan of the order Foraminiferida, with shells of calcium carbonate. Their shells have pores through which filaments project. Some form part of the plankton, others live on the sea bottom.

The many-chambered Globigerina is part of the plankton. Its shells eventually form much of the chalky ooze of the ocean floor.

Fossil foraminifera can be used to study past changes in climate. The fossils contain the two common isotopes of oxygen, 16O and 18O, in different ratios, depending on the salinity of the sea water; therefore the colder the water, the more oxygen-18 the fossils contain.
