forbidden line

In astronomy, emission line seen in the spectra of certain astronomical objects that are not visible under the conditions prevailing in laboratory experiments. They indicate that the hot gas emitting them is at extremely low density. Forbidden lines are seen, for example, in the tenuous gas of the Sun's corona, in HII regions (regions of hot, ionized hydrogen), and in the centres of certain active galaxies.
