Any of a group of temperate eastern Asian shrubs, which bear yellow bell-shaped flowers in early spring before the leaves appear. (Genus Forsythia, family Oleaceae.)

This winter, which was colder than the average Los Angeles winter, has given us more blooms than usual on the lilacs and forsythias that may be spotted here and there.
It was warm too, fooling the forsythias into behaving as if it were April.
