common time

In music, alternative name for 4/4 time. The symbol C which denotes common time originates in music of the Middle Ages in which triple time (three beats in a bar) was considered perfect (as it reflected the Holy Trinity) and notated by a circle (the perfect geometric shape), and duple time (two beats in a bar) was considered imperfect and notated by a broken circle.
