franc

Currency of France until 2002, when the franc was replaced by the euro, the single currency of the European Union. It was called the franc from 1360 when it was a gold coin inscribed Francorum Rex, ‘King of the Franks’. The franc CFA (Communauté française d'Afrique) is the currency of the former French territories in Africa; in France's Pacific territories the franc CFP (Communauté française du pacifique) is used.

The franc is the currency unit of Switzerland, and, until 2002, was the currency in Belgium and Luxembourg.
