franc-tireur

Civilian who, contrary to the rules of war, takes up arms in a private capacity against the enemy. The name comes from the Franco-Prussian War 1870–71 when French patriots in German-occupied France took pot shots at German soldiers as the opportunity presented itself. They were similar in nature to guerrillas and partisans.
