free-reed instrument

Musical wind instrument such as the mouth organ, accordion, or harmonium, that employs tuned metal tongues vibrating at a predetermined frequency as valves controlling the escape of air under pressure. Free reeds do not overblow, but the mouth organ can be made to ‘bend’ the pitch by varying the air pressure.
