freehold

In England and Wales, ownership of land for an indefinite period. It is contrasted with a leasehold, which is always for a fixed period. In practical effect, a freehold is absolute ownership.

Freehold

Town and administrative headquarters of Monmouth County, New Jersey; population (1990) 10,700. It is located 29 km/18 mi south of Perth Amboy. Its manufactures include chemicals, rubber goods, magnetic tapes, glass, and food products, and it is also a commercial centre. In Freehold are a performing arts centre and Freehold Raceway, a harness-racing track. Settled by Scots in the mid 1600s, it was long called Monmouth Courthouse (1715-1801).

The township of Freehold (population (1990) 24,700) surrounds the borough and includes the communities of East Freehold (population 3842) and West Freehold (population 11,166). The Battle of Monmouth (1778) is commemorated by a state park. In the south is Turkey Swamp Park.
