fritillary

In botany, any of a group of plants belonging to the lily family. The snake's head fritillary (F. meleagris) has bell-shaped flowers with purple-chequered markings. (Genus Fritillaria, family Liliaceae.)

fritillary

In zoology, any of a large grouping of butterflies of the family Nymphalidae. Mostly medium-sized, fritillaries are usually orange and reddish with a black criss-cross pattern or spots above and with silvery spots on the underside of the hindwings.

They take their name from the Latin word fritillus (‘dice box’) because of their spotted markings.

From the wide vistas of saltwater marshes teeming with wildlife (great blue herons, Atlantic blue crabs, black and gold fritillary butterflies, mating lovebugs) to the majestic live oaks with whirls of Spanish moss entangled in their limbs to the wide sandy beaches with names (Nanny Goat Beach and Cabrillou) that sound like song titles, the island beckons the appreciative exploring group or the solitary writer seeking inspiration.
It is fascinating to observe a female Gulf Fritillary depositing eggs on the tendrils of Passion Vine and then, after a couple of days, to discover the orange, spiny caterpillars munching away on the leaves.
