fritillaryIn zoology, any of a large grouping of butterflies of the family Nymphalidae. Mostly medium-sized, fritillaries are usually orange and reddish with a black criss-cross pattern or spots above and with silvery spots on the underside of the hindwings. They take their name from the Latin word fritillus (‘dice box’) because of their spotted markings. |
