frost hollow

Depression or steep-sided valley in which cold air collects on calm, clear nights. Under clear skies, heat is lost rapidly from ground surfaces, causing the air above to cool and flow downhill (as katabatic wind) to collect in valley bottoms. Fog may form under these conditions and, in winter, temperatures may be low enough to cause frost.
