| The fugitive slave laws were acts passed by Congress in 1793 and 1850. After traveling primarily by ship to San Francisco, he became a successful retailer who not only ran a western extension of the Underground Railroad but also fought for basic civil rights such as the abolition of the fugitive slave laws in California and the right of African Americans to testify in court. |
