According to this classification system, COPD is present when: residual volume is > 140% predicted, functional residual capacity is >130% predicted, total lung capacity is >120% predicted, or maximum voluntary ventilation is <75% predicted. Theoretically, it is preferable to measure maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures at functional residual capacity because the recoil of the lungs or chest wall will not influence the respiratory muscle force produced.
