fundamental vibration

Standing wave of the longest wavelength that can be established on a vibrating object such as a stretched string or air column. The sound produced by the fundamental vibration is the lowest-pitched (usually dominant) note heard.

The fundamental vibration of a string has a stationary node at each end and a single antinode at the centre where the amplitude of vibration is greatest.
