fusion

In physics, the fusing of the nuclei of light elements, such as hydrogen, into those of a heavier element, such as helium. The resultant loss in their combined mass is converted into energy. Stars and thermonuclear weapons are powered by nuclear fusion.

Nuclear fusion takes place in the Sun, where hydrogen nuclei fuse at temperatures of about 10 million°C/18 million°F producing huge amounts of heat and light energy.

So far no successful fusion reactor – one able to produce the required energy and contain the reaction – has been built. See energy and cold fusion.

Pinch fusion occurs when a sufficiently strong electric current is passed through a plasma and generates a magnetic field which constricts the particles.

fusion

In music, a combination of styles; the term usually refers to jazz-rock fusion. Jazz trumpeter Miles Davis began to draw on rock music in the late 1960s, and jazz-rock fusion flourished in the 1970s with bands such as Weather Report (formed in 1970 in the USA) and musicians such English guitarist John McLaughlin.

Other important jazz-rock fusion artists include Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman, and Pat Metheny.
