jungle fowl

Bird of the genus Gallus, family Phasianidae, order Galliformes. There are four species. The red jungle fowl, Gallus gallus, is generally considered to be the origin of domesticated poultry. Its back is purplish-red and orange, while the under surface, wings, and tail are greenish-black tinged with yellow. It is a native of India, Sumatra, the Philippines, and the Celebes.

It is pugnacious towards its own kind; the noise of both cock and hen is said to resemble that of ordinary domestic varieties. The other species of the genus are G. sonnerati, the grey jungle fowl, a native of India; G. varius, found in Java; and G. lafayettii, a native of Sri Lanka.
