gar

Any of a group of primitive bony fishes, which also includes sturgeons. Gar have long, beaklike snouts and elongated bodies covered in heavy, bony scales. All four species of gar live in freshwater rivers and lakes of the Mississippi drainage. See also needlefish. (Order Semionotiformes.)
