Annual leguminous plant (see legume), grown for food in India and the Middle East. Its short hairy pods contain edible seeds similar to peas. (Cicer arietinum, family Leguminosae.)

SANTA CLARITA -- Bright red curried squares of tofu-like paneer, spiced rice with cauliflower and peas and spicy garbanzo beans with rose syrup water sit atop brightly colored silk tablecloths, staples of an Indian holiday celebration meal.
The 200-acre site, originally a garbanzo bean farm, was developed into a golf course by developers Ken and Robert Zuckerman, who spent $130 million.
The Garbanzo Beans, Green Lentils, Kidney Beans, and Pinto Beans varieties are appetizing as well.
