loudnessSubjective judgement of the level or power of sound reaching the ear. The human ear cannot give an absolute value to the loudness of a single sound, but can only make comparisons between two different sounds. The precise measure of the power of a sound wave at a particular point is called its intensity. Accurate comparisons of sound levels may be made using sound-level meters, which are calibrated in units called decibels. How to thank TFD for its existence? | One such area is the aesthetics of punk, through which Koether channels German "bad painting," East Village garishness, and flashy '80s commodity art in a range of styles that are historically savvy yet burst with youthful energy. There is plenty of gratuitous titillation and tabloid exaggeration, but amid the garishness the weekly magazines have shone their torches into Japan's darkest corners, illuminating for the common reader everything from top-level bribery to nuclear cover-ups to food-labeling seams. And it was silly even to speak of Sambo's multi-colored apparel or hundred-plus pancakes as stereotypes of garishness and gluttony. |
