gastroscope

In medicine, instrument for viewing the interior of the stomach. It consists of a tube with a light and mirrors attached that is introduced into the stomach via the mouth and the oesophagus. A camera attachment allows photographs to be taken of the stomach interior.

Gastroscopy using fibreoptic technology allows the observation of images that are transmitted through a fibreoptic bundle or a small video camera. Flexibility of the instrument allows photographs of all areas of the stomach and tissue samples can be taken to assist in diagnosis when required.
