Opera by Rossini (libretto by G Gherardini, based on the French melodrama La Pie voleuse by J-M T B d'Aubigny and L C Caigniez), first produced at La Scala, Milan, Italy, on 31 May 1817. It tells how Ninetta is condemned to death for stealing silverware but is released when a magpie is identified as the culprit.
