In mathematics, to produce a sequence of numbers from either the relationship between one number and the next or the relationship between a member of the sequence and its position. For example, un+1 = 2un generates the sequence 1, 2, 4, 8, ... ; an = n(n+1) generates the sequence of numbers 2, 6, 12, 20, ..
