Acanthurus

Genus of fishes, in the order Perciformes, found in tropical seas. They are known as surgeon fish, having on each side of the tail a moveable, lancetlike spine, which is used for attack and defence. Normally the spine is kept in a sheath, but when the fish is threatened the spine is quickly turned outwards and the tail is lashed from side to side.
