Cryptomeria

Small genus of evergreen coniferous trees in the family Taxodiaceae. The Japanese cedar C. japonica, a native of China and Japan, has soft, feathery foliage and can reach 30–35 m/100–180 ft. It is an important timber tree in Japan, where it has long been used for building boats. Ornamental forms are also cultivated (they were popular in Victorian gardens), and dwarf forms are planted in rock gardens.
