Raphia

Genus of tropical palm trees. There are 28 species, found in Africa, Madagascar, and South America; some with large leaves and huge fruit spikes up to 90 kg in weight. The young leaves of the African raffia palm R. farinifera are used like string and in making baskets; the sweet sap of the bamboo palm R. vinifera and the wine palm R. hookeri are used for winemaking.
