South African tortoise Psammobates geometricus which grows to only 10-12 cm/4-5 in in length. It is acutely threatened by the loss of its habitat, which has shrunk to just 4% of the reptile's original range. Remaining areas are mainly fragmented and have been invaded by alien plant species that the tortoise is unable to eat.
