GuernseySecond-largest of the Channel Islands; area 63 sq km/24.3 sq mi; population (2001) 59,800. The capital is St Peter Port. Products include electronics, tomatoes, flowers, and butterflies; and since 1975 it has been a major financial centre. Guernsey cattle, which are a distinctive pale fawn colour and give rich, creamy milk, originated here. Guernsey has belonged to the English crown since 1066, but was occupied by German forces 1940-45. |
