Guernsey originally flew the plain cross of St George. The yellow cross was added in 1985 to distinguish the flag from that of England. It is taken from the flag of William the Conqueror (King of England 1066-87), seen in the Bayeux tapestry.

Second-largest of the Channel Islands; area 63 sq km/24.3 sq mi; population (2001) 59,800. The capital is St Peter Port. Products include electronics, tomatoes, flowers, and butterflies; and since 1975 it has been a major financial centre. Guernsey cattle, which are a distinctive pale fawn colour and give rich, creamy milk, originated here.

Guernsey has belonged to the English crown since 1066, but was occupied by German forces 1940-45.
