ghost marriage

Social institution whereby if a man dies without heirs, a wife is ‘married’ to his name by his brother. She bears children (by the brother, with whom she lives) who are legally those of the dead man. That way, the dead man has heirs to inherit his wealth and make sacrifices to his spirit. The practice of ghost marriage is found in certain parts of Africa, such as among the Nuer of southern Sudan.
