Opera by Verdi (libretto by Felice Romani, used earlier by Adalbert Gyrowetz for his Finto Stanislao), first produced at La Scala, Milan, Italy, on 5 September 1840. It is Verdi's only comic opera apart from Falstaff. In the story, Belfiore is disguised as King Stanislaus to protect the sovereign and prevents his love, the widow Marchesa, from marrying another.
