Glaucophane through a polarized microscope. Glaucophone is a translucent mineral found in metamorphic rocks.

In geology, a blue amphibole, Na2(Mg,Fe,Al)5Si8O22(OH )2. It occurs in glaucophane schists (blue schists), formed from the ocean floor basalt under metamorphic conditions of high pressure and low temperature; these conditions are believed to exist in subduction systems associated with destructive plate boundaries (see plate tectonics), and so the occurrence of glaucophane schists can indicate the location of such boundaries in geological history.
