Globe

Town and administrative headquarters of Gila County, east-central Arizona; population (1990) 6,100. It is located 113 km/70 mi east-southeast of Phoenix. It is in a mountainous mining and ranching area, with nearby deposits of copper, silver, gold, asbestos, manganese, vanadium, and tungsten. An 1870s silver centre, it later developed as one of the nation's largest copper producers; the yield declined after 1918, but some local mines are still active.

Globe is on a prehistoric pueblo site; the 600-year-old Besh-ba-gowah cliff dwellings are 2 km/1 mi to the south. The huge San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation lies to the east; Globe serves as its trade centre.
