glomerulonephritis

Group of kidney disorders characterized by damage to the glomeruli, clusters of capillaries through which waste products are filtered out of the blood and into the kidney tubules (see nephron). It is the commonest cause of end-stage renal failure.

Dwight Robinson of Harvard Medical School showed that in mice fed with fish oil the incidence of glomerulitis, one kind of kidney disease, was reduced, while necrotizing vasculitis, another kind of kidney disease, seemed to be aggravated by the supplement.
