Mainly in the 13th and 14th centuries, a penny minted in gold instead of the more usual silver of the time, designed for prestige rather than everyday commercial use. They were occasionally produced in Anglo-Saxon times, including the reign of Edward the Confessor, but most were circulated between 1257 and 1270, although their face value was as high as 2 shillings by 1265.
