graffitiInscriptions or drawings carved, scratched, or drawn on public surfaces, such as walls, fences, or public-transport vehicles. Graffiti art rose out of the urban street culture of New York in the 1970s, and was later assimilated into commercial art forms. Tagging is the act of writing an individual logo on surfaces with spray paint or large felt-tip pens.

Before my day starts with seeing a youth at risk who wants to go to college, a collegian who wants to go to grad school, another who wants to go to med school, a seventh-grader who wants a boarding school and responding to phone calls from London and Seoul, I thought I'd say thanks and congratulations for the spread you gave the college-bound students (``The Best and Brightest,'' June 5) who aren't out graffitiing our lives. |
